The election is tomorrow and shit is getting crazy.
The right is throwing poop at the left and the left is throwing poop at the right.
I get it, each side is trying to win and we live in a crazy world where the only candidates that get attention are the ones that goes extreme. But it's getting out of hand and the people in the middle are getting bulldozed.
The right needs the left and the left needs the right. We all have political biases and blind spots and we need each other to think through and solve difficult problems.
Tim Urban put it nicely, the political spectrum isn't just right and left, it's upper right, lower right, upper left and lower left.
The people who live in the upper level see their ideas as science experiments that they look to test to find truth. The people on the lower side see their ideas as part of themselves and if you challenge them youre challenging them directly.
So the "real" fight isn't right vs left. The real fight is upper right vs lower right and upper left vs lower left. The real contention is in each person and in each party.
So now what?
I think C. G. Jung got it right - change starts individually.
We each need to do our part to develop ourselves so we can come at problems effectively. Next we need to challenge and inspire those that share our political biases that live on the lower rungs to do the same. Then maybe we can put down the poop and collectively move forward.
